Percussionists need to command their performance space, asserting their presence with unquestioning authority. Stratiform Strut was written as a coronation march for the Elgin Youth Symphony Percussion Ensemble in 2014, a symbolic crown of its autonomous status within EYSO. Stratiform describes an arrangement in thin layers that form a unified structure. Playing percussion in an orchestra is all about knowing how an individual part contributes to the collective intent. A percussion section is one layer of the orchestral sound. However, the percussion section, itself, has layers of its own. Because percussion instruments occupy a wide spectrum of timbres these musicians need to create their own balance, which in turn, balances to the rest of the group. I want young musicians to understand how they fit into the collective, while unapologetically occupying the space that they need.
